Terraces toward the water

Terraces, glazed rooms and planted surfaces follow a steep coastal slope. The villas are conceived as a sequence of sheltered places facing the water.

Status
Concept

Developed as a concept, the villas work with a dramatic change in level. Living spaces step down the hillside, with broad decks, pools and glazed frontages opening towards the bay. Roof surfaces and planting overlap, making the boundary between building and terrain deliberately less abrupt.

Slender shade elements and projecting canopies give the terraces a more intimate scale within the wide view. The composition can be read in section: arrival above, rooms set into the slope, and outdoor living extending towards the water. Open views of the water are balanced by the close scale of the terrace, its planting and the sheltered room behind.

A contemporary reading

The project joins a current conversation about architecture that takes its form from terrain. Its relevant contribution is sectional: accommodating a large view through smaller, protected outdoor rooms.
