16Parametric design with purpose
Parametric design as a way to compare architectural options, connect geometry to constraints and make the reasons for a decision visible.
A parametric approach describes relationships between parts of a design. Change an input and the connected geometry can change with it. The architectural value lies in choosing those relationships carefully. A model of a facade might connect opening dimensions, panel spacing and a structural grid. A model of a neighbourhood might relate plot boundaries, access routes and common space. Each is useful only to the extent that it represents the question being asked.
The first task is to distinguish fixed constraints from choices. Some dimensions may be established by an existing structure or a confirmed brief; others remain available for exploration. The model should also record where an input is provisional. Otherwise a precise drawing can conceal a weak assumption. Making the dependencies legible allows a client, designer or specialist to understand why an option changed and what would need to be checked before taking it further.
The fresh market provides a starting point for exploring the relationship between roof profiles, frontage and repeated facade elements. A measured entrance offers a smaller scale at which to examine rhythm, surface and the position of openings. The countryside community concept shifts the question towards the relationship between repeated residential elements and common landscape. These projects suggest different modelling questions; their published images do not, by themselves, establish an optimum or prove a performance result.
Comparison needs an agreed method. A study might measure panel variation, usable area or the number of repeated components. Other qualities, such as how an entrance feels or how a room addresses a garden, need drawings and discussion alongside numerical results. A model that favours one measure can make another relationship worse. Keep the competing criteria visible, and retain the options that explain the tradeoff rather than presenting one unexplained winner.
The next step is to connect the model to the people who will develop and construct the work. A geometry study can identify questions about junctions, tolerances and fabrication, while technical performance requires appropriate specialist analysis.
