A place of exchange

The fresh market brings a strong architectural silhouette to an everyday commercial programme. The completed building combines a sequence of raised roof profiles with long glazed frontages and textured exterior planes. Wood and metal give texture to the main facade.

At ground level, the building opens towards a paved frontage that accommodates the documented seasonal expansion of the café. This meeting of enclosure and open edge gives the market more than a recognisable outline: it makes room for the daily exchange between shopping, meeting and staying a little longer.

A contemporary reading

The current focus on places of informal gathering offers a productive reading of the market. Its civic quality lies in the ordinary: a clear entrance, an active frontage and an outdoor place to pause.
