Architecture

An open threshold

Terracotta-coloured volumes frame a glazed central space. A clear entrance and a strong contrast between solid and transparent surfaces give the retail centre its identity.

Status
completed

The completed retail centre is presented through a composition of warm-coloured exterior planes and a tall glazed central volume. The entrance is marked by a projecting canopy, with the more transparent part of the building revealing the depth of the interior behind it.

The colour and scale of the solid walls give the building a recognisable address, while glazing introduces a different experience at the point of arrival. Broad approaches and a clearly articulated entrance establish a sequence from the surrounding open space into the retail environment. The architecture works through a small number of emphatic gestures.

A contemporary reading

Current conversations about shared commercial space place renewed value on arrival and legibility. The project’s contribution is a visible threshold: a building that makes its entrance and interior depth easy to understand.
