Planes within a room

A showroom apartment composed through freestanding planes, strong material contrasts and a floating canopy. Each surface helps define the room around it.

Status
completed

The completed showroom is a 180 m² apartment interior. Its interplay of horizontal and vertical planes pays tribute to Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavilion. Here, strongly veined surfaces, dark horizontal bands and timber finishes establish a sequence of spaces within an open interior.

A veneered canopy sits over the service areas, while changes in material give living, dining and reception their own character. The design uses the thickness, height and extent of each plane to make boundaries without relying on a succession of enclosed rooms. Colour appears through the material palette itself.

A contemporary reading

In a moment of renewed interest in crafted interiors, the project invites attention to composition before decoration: the way a wall, canopy or built-in element can carry several spatial roles at once.
