concept

The Detached Veranda is conceived as an outdoor room within a planted garden. The concept places a low roof on a slender dark frame, alongside timber screens and a deck extending towards the edge of a pond. Seating occupies both the sheltered interior of the pavilion and the more open platform beyond.

Horizontal slats give the sides of the structure depth without making them visually solid. The relationship between roof, screen and deck produces several degrees of exposure within a small footprint. The 100 m² programme is given architectural variety through a few carefully placed elements.

A contemporary reading

Timber’s contemporary appeal is especially clear at this scale: a repeated member can make shade, a boundary and a visual rhythm. The pavilion is a useful study of how a modest structure can extend life into the garden.
