Living between levels

A two-level, 185 m² apartment where the stair, shelving and living room form one composition. Built-in elements make circulation part of domestic life.

Status
completed

This completed apartment is a two-level mansard home. A pale stair rises through the living space beside a patterned screen, while illuminated shelves and timber wall surfaces join the circulation to the room around it.

The stair is treated as an inhabited edge, with display, storage and seating arranged around its base. Light-coloured upholstery and large pale wall planes keep the main room visually open; warmer surfaces give the smaller settings a sense of enclosure. The architectural work is concentrated in the relationship between levels, built-in furniture and everyday use.

A contemporary reading

Current compact-home coverage is as much about useful relationships as floor area. This apartment demonstrates how circulation and storage can become part of a coherent room, rather than separate demands on it.
